The hardness of water is affected by the amount of calcium and magnesium present in the water supply. Calcium deficiency symptoms are subtle at first, but they manifest in brittle stems, dark leaves, and poor growth. Older leaves that are magnesium deficient will turn yellow between the veins and/or have rusty brown patches.
